Public Nudity
I'd love to be able to go anywhere naked without fear of being reported to the plice and arrested. Some people are brave enough to do this, eg, Cambridge cyclist Richard Collins is known for regularly cyling naked around Cambridge where the police accepted that he was not acting illegally. However, he was recently arrested for cycling naked along Brighton Safront and charges unde Section 5 of Public Order ACT. Sect 5 means a person was acting in a manner likely to cause harm or distress. I'm certain that Richard had no intention of causing harm or distress and was just excercising his right to be clothes free. Unfortunately, modern society and the authorities themselves are unable to disassociate nudity from sexualual behaviour and in doing so displaying any nudity in public is incorrectly deemed to be wrong. Bearing in mind that public nudity events like WNBR seem to be accepted by the public and police Iincluding the one in Brighton), it is unfortunate that individuals who prefer to be naked in public are deemed to be acting illegally when in fact they are not. Public nudity iself is not illegal. Perhaps POA should be amended to ensure police officers themseleves are aware that simple nudity itself should not be deemed to intend alarm or distress and let us naturists enjoy the freedom of being clothes free anywhere without any harassment. Unfortunately, modern society is unlikely to accept simple nudity is wrong.
